Civic Education is vital to creating an informed population of citizens who are engaged with the democratic processes in their own communities, nations and beyond. The new Social Media hold tremendous potential as a potent tool for civic education in both established and emerging democracies, and can enable citizens to actively monitor and hold their governments accountable by broadcasting domestic situations to a connected global community. Moreover, the new Social Media provides new opportunities to engage women, ethnic minorities and other disenfranchised citizens in ways that are unprecedented.  From the Arab Spring, to Occupy Wall Street to recent events in Hungary and Russia, this has never been more evident. The question is, how can citizens, activists, and educators best use the new Social Media to create sustainable social movements that enhance democracy? Join in for an interactive discussion about the role of the new Social Media in creating vibrant, sustainable, and accountable democracies.
